Your Title Block Is Your Business Card

As we have already established, what you deliver is how you present yourself and your company. Within every deliverable, there is one constant that will always be there. What is it?
Your title block!
A title block is not just a block showing all the relevant project information, although it certainly is that. It can also, for example, help you identify the original source of a drawing more easily, along with many other smart features that can be added.
But that is not really the point this time. This time, I want to highlight the importance of your title block as a showcase for your business.
Just like your plan in general, your title block should follow a clear and consistent standard. This will not only make your work easier but will also demonstrate the effort you put into presenting information accurately and professionally.
This is also the part of the drawing that almost everyone understands, so it should be logical, tidy and easy to read.
Our experience helping CAD businesses has shown us that many newly established, and even long-established companies have problems with their title blocks. Often, it is a title block they used during previous employment. They may have tried to change it a little here and there, and voilà, that became their final company title block.
One thing these companies often have in common is also the first thing we design for them: a new title block.
When designing a title block, we combine our CAD knowledge with a graphic design background, because that is what title-block design actually is.
Graphic design principles help ensure that the title block is easy to read, that the eye does not jump towards irrelevant information and that the most important details are noticed first. You should have a clear standard for displaying all relevant information, with consistent text sizes that are readable not only on the screen but also when printed.
There are many other small tips and tricks that can make your title block stand out, including carefully considered line offsets, block sizes, spacing and alignment.
Lastly, once all the information is presented neatly and correctly, the title block is also the place where you can display your logo, and perhaps even your contact information. This means that it can become a subtle marketing tool as well.
It is like a label on your plan.
It is your business card.
And because of that, it is crucial to present it well!
