The first requirement in any kind of drafting is, of course, knowing the software. We can all agree that this is the foundation—but is knowing the software really enough?
We live in a very visual era. Although the accuracy of our data should always be the top priority, many clients don’t know how to interpret that data. In the end, they might judge your work based on the one thing they can understand: the final deliverable.
The client sees a printed plan, or, more commonly today, a PDF. In many cases, they are not from the industry and have little or no knowledge of how to read plans. But isn’t it our job to help them understand?
I believe it is.
That is why it is so important to present data in a consistent and tidy way, clearly identifying the meaning of everything shown on the plan. This isn’t supposed to be a discussion about legends or layers—we’ll cover those another time. It is about the importance of presenting your data so that it is easy to read and the features are easy to recognise.
From a professional engineer’s or surveyor’s point of view, you might wonder why this matters so much. But how valuable is the data you provide if it isn’t presented in a way that makes it easy to use?
It isn’t only the final client who benefits. Other professionals who come across your drawings will appreciate the effort you put into making everything clear, tidy and consistent, perhaps even more than the client themselves. A well-presented plan is easier to read, review and mark up. It also helps others begin planning future developments and works.
So yes, how you present your data should be important to you. Don’t underestimate the value of showing your data in a way that increases the value of your work rather than decreases it.
Even a well-presented meal feels better to eat, doesn’t it? The same is true for almost everything else, especially in today’s visual world.
In the end, the main thing that represents and sells your services, and the thing your client can show to their neighbour, is your final deliverable.
Show it well!
